Single Mom Talk Radio with Julia Espey
Author Julia Espey is many things: a one-time single mom, a rocket scientist (literally), a business executive, a classical painter, and a pioneer in the area of conscious parenting—parenting aimed toward enlightened child development and life preparation. Julia’s calling to be an author and speaker arose not from her professional pursuits but from the very personal experience of finding herself as a single mom with a young son, and feeling overwhelmed and inadequate. Struck with the realization that she had to be both a mother and father, Julia realized that she had no idea how to be a father!
Julia turned to what she knew best from her years as a NASA researcher—research. She began asking extraordinary dads to share their parenting wisdom and the book, “If I Were Your Daddy, This Is What You’d Learn,” comprises the answers she got from thirty-five highly successful men—all committed fathers. The stories and parenting lessons from these men not only gave Julia and her son a flight plan for how to fill the void of Daddy, but also serves as a priceless resource to the estimated 9.9 million single mothers living in America and beyond, as well as fathers and mothers wanting to improve their parenting skills.
Julia’s professional background is quite diverse. She entered Georgia Tech at a young age and graduated with honors in aerospace engineering. She spent the next decade working as a NASA flight test engineer, contributing to the development of the space shuttle. In 1995, she took early retirement from NASA and traveled the world. After living in Bermuda for a time she settled in New York City where she discovered that her right-brain gifts equaled those of her left. So she began studying fine art full-time. Within seven years she’d established herself as a serious classical painter. Her work has been sold in prominent galleries, and can be found on collectors’ walls nationwide.
Realizing that she wanted greater financial security while raising her son solo in NYC, in 2004, Julia joined Arbonne International, an international health and wellness company. She became a vice president after only eight months. In her first two years with the company, she built and trained a national sales organization with thousands of independent consultants, and net yearly sales reaching over $1.5 million.
After raising Jackson solo for seven years, Julia re-married and is now living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is currently at work on the sequel, If I Were Your Mommy, This Is What You’d Learn, featuring successful women reflecting on their most impactful mothering moments and practices. Its release is slated for December 2012.
